How to open up an Incestuous Industry to New Blood…..

Morning Folks!!

I have often said we are an incestuous industry since most business in the domain industry are with other domainers and not with end users and those beyond our sphere. If you lived in a town with only relatives you might have problems unless you bring in new folks with new blood.

I think that is the one common thread that among others that unite Rick, Rick and Howard. The vision we all have is pulling the rest of the universe into our orbit by explaining how they benefit doing business with us. That allows everybody to expand while the rest of the universe is contracting.

So what will be different are the faces. The companies. The opportunities. The willingness of others to do business with us now that they are forced to focus on sales not egos. Imagine that, sales is about to be the focus instead of an ego stroking Super Bowl commercial that corporate America has been wasting $$$ on for way too long. Time to get real. Come on! Candy.com for the price of a commercial?? A CRIME!! Not anymore. That opportunity is gone. It will be $30 million, $50 million, $100 million the next time that domain changes hands.

What’s the value of a great domain name? NOW is the TIME to prove with OUR numbers, what a domain is worth by comparing costs and limitations of a brick and mortar store compared to one online without limitations. The TIME is right to do this because the focus is on sales. Problem is, does anyone remember how to sell?

The times we are in present an opportunity and that is why we can transform an incestuous industry into one that flows with other industries that can benefit from us and in turn we can benefit from them. Having a team of folks devoted to making this happen will change not only the face of TRAFFIC, but of the entire industry. When we look back in 18 months from now, folks will be amazed what we have accomplished during the most challenging economic times in our lives.

It’s hard to articulate everything we envision. But as it unfolds in New York, Amsterdam and Las Vegas in the next months you will have a front row seat to history in the making. Then it will be ready for the world stage. Hitting every continent and every corner of the business world in the years to come.

Expanding a great industry to include folks that should be included. New blood. New opportunity. New ways to make money. New ways to market what you have. New ways to profit off traffic. New ways to explain traffic. New ways with new markets with new ideas. The end result is a rising tide for all and hopefully a consolidation of the industry into an economic powerhouse instead of thousands of sputtering engines.

We know there is show fatigue. But we also know there is a reason for that and know the spark it needs to bring everyone under one tent as we move into the future. Too many bright minds in this space to all be going in different directions. We have the collective power to accomplish anything. Haven’t we wasted enough time?

Have a GREAT Day!

Rick Schwartz

The primary element that I respect of you Rick, is the driving force, the excitement that you provide to the domain industry even at hard times of a challenging economy. It’s been an inspiration and has helped me achieve financial and personal goals. Many thanks.

I think you need to have a strategy. I can’t really see what, why and where this is all going.
If your conferences are technical and narrow then it will be a trade conference and as such you cannot expect to bring”new” people along to them. And if you bring new people along then to what purpose do they serve?
What I have seen with the conferences (pictures) is that if you took out the employees of the advertisers and the groupies that go along to all of them… then very few new faces indeed.
Domains are the interface between buyers and sellers of information/products/services on the web, so I’d say you need to take the providers perspective and make it more inclusive to their total needs and interests (Rather than strictly domain names).
Anyway, I am sure you’ll work it out.

Eventually domains will truly be marketed and sold like real estate. That has been the vision and dream for ever, and that is where we are finally headed. The buying and selling of domains should be a mainstream activity.
We all see end users that could benefit substantially from a great generic domain and wonder why they don’t realize this. And at the same time we may be aware of the specific perfect domain that is sitting waiting to be bought by them, but the vision and mechanism to make this happen is missing.
So it sounds like someone is finally ready to get out there and make this happen on a large scale.
Forget show fatigue if the market expands to include end-users then there is space for far more events. In a few years there could be a myriad of domain auctions and aftermarkets catering to every market and industry.
The domain industry should have a presence everywhere from startup conferences to business fairs to every major city to banner ads on cnn and everywhere else.
    its time.
good luck rick, you can do it!

This post is coming a couple years after I recognized you had already started practicing this philosophy. If it hadn’t been for you, Crogan, Howard and Rick Latona, my company could not have been so easily reborn – though it has been hard word. And I thank you for that, because between you and Howard, especially, the foundation is layed for a bigger, stronger (almost bionic) new firm.
Opportunity has never been greater, and my new partner – who knew nothing of the domain industry just a few months ago – is on board with an infectious fervor and relish. About 25% of our clients are inside the domain industry – and the rest are not.
I could write a novel here, but one of my problems has always been a misfit ego, but I do my best to admit that and tame it properly, which is a balancing act all its own.
Thanks Rick … and don’t stop writing!!!

    Rick –
Great post for Father’s Day…thanks. I have been saying for the past 10 months that we [Domainers] MUST bridge the gap from our incestuous industry to main stream business owners…
I wholeheartedly look forward to this happening. I can’t wait for business owners to be seeking premium domain names..real quality domain names…NOT NewYorkNewYorkNewYearsEve.com for $50,000 – those guys/gals, in my opinion, ruin the industry and values of domains.
Thanks again Rick, I look forward to seeing you, the team and everyone else in NY
    Happy Father’s Day to all!

    Hi Rick,
    Happy Fathers Day!
How about sending tickets to ceo’s of selected companys to attend to attend some of the shows.
Speakers that can address on some of the successes that some TLD’s bought at some of the shows became a proven success.
When they see and hear what we have, more will come.
How about seminars for CEO’S and others in the domain industry on how to get a valuable name and monetize that name.
    Just a few thoughts,
    Have a good day.

Of course the new blood is essential for the succeed of a business. Especially nowadays that the changes are happening faster and faster, the need to renew ideas is even bigger.

    Just be yourself
In this materialistic society full of human desire, too many people already do not care whether the tired soul and spirit, is able to withstand the pain and pressure all day long panic. They keep moving and try to overtake their competitor. They want to be the master of the world. And many people get lost in this way, they lost themselves. So it is too hard for most people to be themselves.
Just like maybe you like the pandora beads for many years in the beginning, and it is just something like your faith. But one day, you abandon it and search for others. The pandora beads is just like yourself, but in order to ingratiate this world and gain this so called success, you will lose yourself.
Does everything worth this? I don’t think so, I always think now that we are alive, it is necessary to have faith, in pursuit! Please just be yourself not the one just everybody looks. Maybe we can’t master
