BREAKING: Christmas Day Traffic at Record Levels

Good Morning Folks!

In 1996, which was my first online Christmas, traffic from a normal day was down 90%. In 1997 it was down 85%. But a sizeable increase. Eventually it got to where Christmas Day and Christmas Eve would combine to average about 50% off. So you would basically lose one full day of traffic.

Last year was much better. Traffic last Christmas was down somewhere in the 15%-20% range. Here we are in 2010 and while the numbers may be a little soft, they are hardly noticeable. Which sets up the future where Christmas Day could actually be a new positive. This year Christmas Eve was just off 5%. The lowest margin ever off normal traffic. At one time travel meant you could not be online. Today, travel may mean just the opposite.

Christmas day itself was off about 8% from normal. Quite a difference over the years and we may be just 1or 2 years away from actually seeing an increase in traffic on Christmas.

    Hi Mr Rick;
    Just curious. What were you thinking when you first started in domaining? Did a higher being gave you some vision or ….
    Even now, when the picture is clearer about domaining and the direction of development, a huge question mark still lurks in my mind.
    Anyway, you must not stop blogging coz your inspiration is still needed. Thanks.

    That is a good question for Rick. I can’t speak for him but maybe sharing this recent story will make a light come on for you.
    I was in Cancun recently. It was very cold, so cold in fact that people were wearing sweaters at dinner in the evening. I was walking with a couple when the lady asked me How do you come up with domain names. Just then I noticed the guy in a cardigan sweater. With a chuckle I said see that guy over there? How about cardiganswimwear.com. You guessed it CardiganSwimwear.com is available. While I did not register it I did notice that Cardigan Swimwear is actually a fashion in Europe. The moral of the story … Opportunities to own domain names are everywhere (yes even today) you just have to open your eyes and mind to the possibilities before the next person does. Incidentally the husband said how about Corduroy Swimwear? Turns out also a fashion in Europe and also available.

    Rick thanks for sharing this great memory! Christmas 1996 Gary, Sue and their 2 girls were all on vacation in Maui and we got together for Christmas. Gary wanted to borrow my laptop just to check his e-mail (no cell phones with e-mail or AOL webmail back then) which I was also using as a dial-up”WinFax machine” to receive evening faxes from Hong Kong and Taiwan. The good olden days!

    Everybody loves to travel. For many people it may be a hobby, for others, it may be for leisure purpose and get a break from their daily routine lives. One way to make your travel memorable and enjoyable is by being accompanied by some of your family members, especially children.
