BirthdayParty.com. The iPhone is 5 Years Old!!!!

Morning Folks!!

It was 5 years ago tomorrow that I paid my wife’s cousin $100 to stand in line at Apple and buy an iPhone. I still have the box, bag and receipt. It was the day my life changed. Again. I even blogged about it. 6 different times! See if I got it right. From 0% of the market to commanding the market in 5 years! Actually about 1 or 2 years.

http://www.ricksblog.com/.services/blog/6a00d83451f3f569e200d8341c9ca453ef/search?filter.q=iphone

Simply put the most versatile tool in my toolbox. The iPhone is the single most important tool that allows me to live life differently. Better. More effective. Better organized. An office in my hand and everything in it and more.

Less than a year later I made the switch from PC to Mac. I have bought 5 or 6 since then. Then the iPad, I got them everywhere. As for iPhones, I lost count how many I have. I said the iPhone would transform Apple and it did and still is.

Am I writing this on the iPhone? No. But I have. And there is more innovation to come.

There are other powerful tools, but if you don’t know how to use them easily, they don’t have much value. The iPhone just works like my mind. All that power and so simple to use. At a red light I can accomplish all the tasks I need to with time to spare because of simplicity. Just an amazing device. One that will mark an era in a way the hula hoop never envisioned.

Have you made the switch? Are you still stuck on crackberry? Have you NEVER had an iphone? Do you love yours like I love mine? I broke mine once, I thought no biggie. Withinin 15 minutes I needed detox.

I simply bought a phone, saw the future and my entire world changed 5 years ago tomorrow.

Have a GREAT Day!

Rick Schwartz

“The iPhone just works like my mind.”
    Who loves ya baby?
How do you describe something that doesn’t exist but you won’t be able to live without a year from now?
That would have been the iPhone as I tried to explain it to dotMobi fans 6 years ago. Today it’s SIRI and no one knows what the fuck I am talking about.
That’s next from Apple and no more fingers do the walking, your voice does the talking and you computer becomes a servant to you whereas it’s been the other way around. Now being preloaded in 9 automakers dashboards, drive time will never be as productive and screens will matter less. SIRI:”I’m in the mood for scrod which restaurants serve Boston Scrod in 33431 with bead crumbs and diced tomatoes? OK what are people saying about that place? What would I have to spend to bring 5 people there, three appetizers, salad 4 fish dishes one steak and two medium priced red and white wines? Who is the waiter I want to have? Are their deserts good? What demographic is the crowd? Are their single women? What night is best for celebrities and people watching? Is there a nearby place for desert that’s better?
It will be a whole paradigm shift in search because SIRI will rely on multiple sites and bring you exactly what you want. No scrolling, typing, printing, searching or comparing. I don’t know anyone who didn’t like a secretary or maid or butler or assistant…. nor anyone who likes to waste two hours a day commuting to work- your world is about to change. And when it does, Apple as a brand becomes like a family you join. You are attached to them because of what you just said above- the took all that power that you had no idea how to use and Gates interfaces kept you from using- and now you can unleash the incredible power of human ingenuity.

I remember you discussing it on your board. I remember thinking, Rick just wants to have the newest hottest thing as its no biggie. I think 48 hours later you were saying how remarkable the phone was.
You were right, it kicks ass and will only do more over time.
Hard to imagine that was 5 years ago.

Got 4s last year with bose headphones hands free working, also got 27 inch mac last year.
All Done. Will never go back. Best 3k investment ever.
What really is amazing is the resell value on these products.
They have made a BMW with Toyota reliability.
So what company is the next victim in 2 years. Looks like RIM, Nokia are good for patents now. They went down so fast with itv who will be the next victim?

I am sinking with the ship and loyal to my blackberry. Can type as fast as any iphone user and there new phones rolling out are solid. Just bought another blackberry.
The news today does show the gloomy future of RIMM stock and 5k layoffs and first loss in 8 years.
Wife loves her iphone. I just dont get it still. emailing takes forever. Cant take the battery out.
    Just my view.

I don’t have an iphone yet, but my wife does. I use it sometimes and looking forward to getting my own. Kids have ipod touches and those are handy too. I’m still on a cellphone (not even a smartphone).

    Hello Rick,
First let me say I have the utmost respect for Steve Job and his creations. He had an uncanny marketing mind and he knew full well when to restrain his Ego. I fear Apple has lost a great leader.
The decision to cut off apple customers from a best in class service is something he would avoid. Apple has made a monumental Marketing Strategy blunder. They made a decision to take away Google Maps, clearly a much more evolved and superior visual experience, compared to the cheap Knock off they are projecting now.
Those who employ Ego over Intellect, Always Lose. Hopefully they will correct this, and reconsider, their assets depend on this.

Using a Black Apple combo at the moment; Bold 9900 + iPhone.
Using the Bold as my main phone and the iPhone acts as an iPod Touch really.
Love the iPhone but the Bold, like a mistress, just looks too mesmerizing to me, and the buttons just feel so good. (No pun intended)
RIM has much to do to improve the browser and UI though; and stop trying to become LIKE an iPhone, cos they can never beat the iPhone at their own game.

    Hello Rick,
Apple.com is employing the same protectionist tactics that Microsoft emplolyed. Very unwise, this has been a recurring pattern for Tech. Giants downfalls!
Somebody better grab the wheel at Apple.com, they are heading for the ditch. 6/30/12

The iPhone no doubt launched the smartphone genre but they made some functionality missteps that have now allowed the number of Android devices to recently overtake Apples’s numbers. The iPhone battery life issues and not being able to be interchanged by the consumer has cost them many many customers who opted for other smartphones with longer battery life and being able to change to another battery on the fly. Also Apple’s inexplicable blocking of Flash in their devices has infuriarted many who wanted or needed Flash to fully view web pages and/or play games. From a consumer electronics standpoint, you see a parallel here between Apple and Android, and Betamax and VHS, because of Sony’s lockdown approach and not licensing Betamax technology they were overtaken by JVC and VHS, even though Betamax was the better video format all around and stayed that way at least for video professionals and broadcasting (Betacam) for a couple more decades after Sony’s Betamax format lost the consumer market. Just today there was word that Apple will be coming out with a mini-tablet in the 7″ form factor obviously to prevent further market share erosion with Googles new Nexus 7″ tablet at a $199 price point.

There are plenty more of the betamax balls ups, SONY for some reason has always gone out on a limb trying to own some form of proprietary technology that has never become the market standard (because it holds that technology too close) Its memory sticks and some of its other tech come to mind.
Dell is another monstrous balls up as well, once it was cheap and reasonably well made, now its badly made and there’s others than can do better quality at a better price. Dell lost me and plenty more lifetime customers when it went for the short run profit maximising approach. I’ll only be sold shoddy goods once.
So in terms of Apple versus Samsung, Apple has all the hallmarks of why it went downhill lastime and why it will follow SONY if it’s not careful. Restricting customers and trying to squeeze the begesus out of them. Samsung play it fast and loose by going with more open source features (Android, Flash, generic Mp4 music etc) and eventually they will completely win, in mass consumerism I have never seen anyone be able to beat standardised open source adopted technology (except for windows which has a massive barrier to entry and therefore no real competition at the moment).
