First Time Ever Released! My Entire 1996 Domain Portfolio

Morning Folks!!

I am a bit of a pack rate. An electronic pack rat for sure!! My electronic files go back to 1996. Once and a while I will open a file and take a look back. Today I opened a November 1996 file that contained my entire portfolio after 10 months collecting domain names. With the exception of about 59 adult domains, this was the actual list from that time.

My first year. NO PPC. No real way to monetize a domain at that time, The adult industry was just starting to sprout. Mainstream wasn't even called mainstream yet nor was much there. But even back then my portfolio was always heavily weighted to mainstream, Main Street type domain names, that I always believed would have much greater value in the future.

Of these a couple never made it to my account. I let 1 or 2 expire as I learned about trademarks. I sold about 5 for a total of about $800,000. 1 or 2 may have even been hijacked. The rest I still own.

Probably Gaysex.com is the one on the list that has generated the most revenue over the years. That $100 slot machine play has spit out well into the 6 figures over the years and still spitin'.

Here are 168 of 227 domains I owned in November 1996. Some good, some not. But there was no road-map back then. Most of them were not even hooked up yet or were just in the process of getting activated. See the ISP's wanted $39.95 PER DOMAIN to hook up back then. So I had to find a guy capable of hooking them all up for much less. So I finally found a guy that would charge me $250/month for all the domains and that was really the start of things and figuring out which domains had value and which did not. I just try to follow human nature the best I could. And still do.

I have always wondered what I might have registered back then without knowing the future. You sure saw it coming. Very interesting – thanks for sharing!

Rick, thanks for sharing that list. It’s amazing what difference one year makes. In 1997, shared hosting was still expensive at $60 /month but I was getting unlimited hosted domains per account. Not that I needed that, as I only had one domain. :-)

Looks like Your mind (or Soul) was torn up between Jesus and gambling back then (Many face that choice every day). I’m not sure on which people make more money

Schwartz, the domain king, has a dirty mind. It helped in the early days. So much sin in that list. And the balls to have Jesus loves you in the list? Priceless!

Thanks for sharing this list, this is why I love domaining
so much most things in life other people can edit and try
to take the credit. Every domain is unique and lots of these
domains have struck oil!! This proves FACTS and NEVER
again in domaining an opportunity like this will happen.
It’s a great feeling looking at domains
you have brought over the years.

The thing is it has and most including Rick insisted on missing out because of their insular view of the World.
However, if you actually wanted most of the terms in this list as dot coms in Chinese, Japanese, Russian or Arabic characters, I guess most would still be available or your could obtain them for a few dollars.

So here I come young and dumb in 1996 and I go to register worksmart.com and I see domain king then virtual dates, then next I try world champ.com and see domain king and virtual dates…. and imagine this 1000 times in 3 days…. who is this guy I wondered. Then I move to Boca and he’s on the front page and it leads me to eRealEstate.com…. I am still convinced it’s God talking

I mean 1999 I come young and dumb
btw, I didn’t get world champ.com but do have EarthChamp.
Does anybody see the photo of Rick shaking Don King’s hand now in a different way. What a feeling that is to know the famous may get the credit but in this match the knock out scored by brains not brawn.

You have never understood domain names, and you never will. You just don’t understand the main point, and that is that the United States consumer is the big kahuna.
You are stuck in your dreamland of IDN crap, and you just miss the point over and over again. Like Rick says,it is all about the sale. You would have others believe that if 1,000 people in Bangledesh somehow type in one of your names, that it actually matters. It doesn’t.
You miss the point as usual. You will never get it, either. Your money is made in trying to convince others that your names have value, but at the end there is never a sale with your crap IDNs, so traffic is meaningless.
I’m getting tired of seeing your ramblings about IDN. Time for you to pack it up and admit defeat. You just don’t get it.

Ok, you have had a good laugh at my expense, so show us what you have got , then we can all have a good laugh at yours!

Those casino domains might not be as good as others in your list but are still quality ones. Are they for sale and still under your ownership?

This is super awesome! Have you ever tried profiting from anything other than domain parking on those domains such as building niche websites or forwarding them to affiliates?
