Dot Brand or Dot What?? Afilias gTLD report released

Morning Folks!!

Afilias conducted a recent survey and .gTLD owners may not be encouraged. Tho I believe those numbers will change in time, what remains to be seen is will those numbers eventually climax and then back off? It measures things like awareness, trust and reaction. Worth the read for sure!

"89 percent of women in the UK and 86 percent in the US admitted they were not aware of these new TLDs, compared to the 68 percent of uK males and 78 percent of American men who were unaware of these changes."

Why would anyone expect people to know about something that is not even live yet?

What do you think people think about the yet to be released iWristwatch or the iBackpack?

If gTLDs were a movie, we would be in the teaser trailer stage a 15 second clip about what’s coming up.

    Interesting stats…

I’ve always thought Britain is wall to wall full of dumb asses, but its some consulation to know that its a whole heap worse in other nations. Must find it hard to breath, I’m basically suffocating here… lol.

Bill, the interesting part of the report was consumer reception words like mistrustful spammy security are important issues with the “public”,also noted that they would give that trust to the dot com.Time will tell for sure and the brandables will probably do well.

    Hello Rick,

The really interesting thing about the .Whatsthis? experiment is there have been comparable extensions, resembling the characteristics and Strategy of the gTld , that have been Total failures. Comparable properties in real estate are used in approximating value. The .Whatsthis? comparables are broadcasting a similar valuation pattern. So are the .Whatsthis? backers acting rationally about expecting a different outcome this time around??

Nice one Dumas, you clearly forgot or haven’t got a clue who Sir Tim Berners-Lee is? I suspect Rick may have more fond memories.

WTF are you talking about? Its a statement about the lack of awareness of the new TLDs.

Your lack of reading comprehension pretty much sums up my statement.

This research only seems to supports what other have stated elsewhere (and better than I) using comparisons for the other domains that have not really taken off (.me, .biz, etc.) and other products (the new coke example) whose “popularity” or “great idea” status is born in a boardroom…

As always, the test by fire is the end-user (consumer) of all of the brands rushing to .brand. Good luck with that, and make sure pockets for re-branding are deep.

My point is made by a classic joke where the protagonist uses the words Dumb Ass to refer to something he has no clue about.

I prefer the classic Shawshank Redemption version (below) which I thought of when I read your ignorant comment.

But then I found a youtubes version that says it so much better than I ever could ;-)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMe3WDmxBEI

    Shawshank Version:
Heywood: The Count of Monte Crisco…
Floyd: That’s “Cristo” you dumb shit.
    Heywood: …by Alexandree Dumb-ass. Dumb-ass.
Andy Dufresne: Dumb-ass? “Dumas”. You know what it’s about? You’ll like it, it’s about a prison break.
Red: We oughta file that under “Educational” too, oughten we?

My reference was to the the heritage of a subject. Without a Brit, you would not have a domain business, DUMB ASS ;-)
