Surviving the Test of Times. Naysayers from 2000 Sound Just Like the Naysayers in 2012. I have Proof.

Morning Folks!!

Words that can stand the test of time are words to be thought about. Nothing makes me sadder than a good person working way too hard and not getting what they want in life. I have done everything over the years to reel those folks in. The guys that have a tug of war between a 'Good Attitude' and their comfortable 'Bad Attitude.' Trapped in the world of 'Mediocrity.' A place I once resided. Dare it be me to say something. To point it out. To show the difference and show the new result.

Work hard for 3 days, then destroy 4 days of work as the MIND takes control instead of them taking control of their minds. Most of you were probably not domaining in 1999-2000. But do you know these NUMB NUTS thought like some reading this right now. They had the opportunity 12 years ago and they BLEW IT! Most of you would give your right arm to have been investing in domains in 2000. But look at the SAME argument then as now. This way of thinking will always make it too late. Even if it was 12 years ago. And I was frustrated and at my wits end at that point in time as you can plainly read. I expected a lot of head wind on this journey. My only surprise in my 17 years of domaining is domainers provide the most head wind of all.

Domains are like jumping rope. It does not matter when you start, it matters how long you can jump and endure and thrive and set records and not be tripped up by the rope or your mind. The timing to jump in and start is still where most get tripped up jumping rope and the same with domainers. They never quite make that parallell and so they jump into domaining without any plan. If you were jumping rope wouldn't you time it just right? If not, you fail before you even start.

So my GIFT to all those 2012 naysayers of the same ilk as the ones in 2000, is my post from that era and see that while few agree, I have not changed my thoughts. Now those domains don't earn that much today. But they do make me more money each month then the $$$ I have parked in bank savings. The dollars they have earned will take care of renewals for thousands of years. That bar is a little low but seems to be the one many use.

From October 22, 2000:

Morning Folks!!

Many, maybe most believe you could not do what I did again. In some respects they are right. In others, they are completely wrong.

I started in 1995 with $1800. So I decided to do an experiment recently.

I bought geteven.com for $760
I bought peeshots.com for $500

I bought ??? (still looking for 1 more domain)

The #1 thing is BE PICKY!! Choose well. THIS is THE most important part of your job.

The above 2 domains make $80/day

Both of these domain have been bought RECENTLY.

With $75 a day PROFIT I have 2 basic choices. I can buy 5-10 domains a DAY for free. Or I could realize that they will earn $2250/month. That $2250 a month now gives me BUYING POWER.

The next thing will determine what kind of businessman I am or you are. It's the ART of the deal. The FORMULA you must CREATE in which 2 parties walk away happy and getting what they want.

I can buy a domain for $2250 CASH.....OR.......you can make a deal and buy a $25,000 domain and pay the guy $2,000 a month for a year. Or you can buy a $2,000 domain EVERY month. or a THOUSAND different scenarios.

Point is:

#1 You can STILL do this.

#2 The FIRST domains are more important than ANY other domains you EVER buy. It is the FUEL you need to get to the next level.

So to those folks that BELIEVE it is all over.......BULLSHIT!!! You just have a BAD attitude and have given up.

I just proved you wrong. But it you buy WORTHLESS domains, you will NEVER make a cent.

Here's the roadmap folks. I can't make it simpler than that.

I REFUSE to even answer a question about this cuz it is in such SIMPLE language that I just don't have the temperament to deal with naysayers.

Got it you Afternic lurkers without the balls to even post??

NOW you understand why I don't deal well with MORONS. If they are not capable of following a SIMPLE example, they are not capable of going to the next level and the next and the next. Morons populate this planet in numbers too high to measure. :-)

Have a GREAT day!!

So 12 years later, has anything really changed? You have folks that know how to embrace success and those that seem to be allergic to it. Folks that defeat themselves by counting their shortfalls and focus on them and folks that count their strengths to build on them. A destructive force vs a constructive force. Those 2 groups will never see eye to eye. Oil and water. Folks that change ignorance into knowledge and power and those that try and impose their ignorance on others.

Let's be clear. There are dozens if not hundreds or more ways to make money with domain names. Make FORTUNES with domain names. The entry bar is lower than any other investment or industry I can think of. One can come in and build an empire with a direction and an idea and a keen understanding of domain names or at least basic business and sales and understanding the market and the FUTURE needs of that market. I can only feel bad for those that struggle to see it. But keep looking. You only lose when you turn to the 'Destructive' mode. The self pity that human nature seems to have an abundent supply of. Don't be the victim of self pity, be the defeater of ignorance, one step at a time.

Have a GREAT Day!

Cant believe you had to use the word”Still” in 2000 when telling people they could be successful with domains. Thanks for the inspiring words

Thank you for your words of wisdom. I found it inspirational and motivating. I can usually can see the positive in just about any situation, and that gives me the persistence I need to press on. I recently had encountered a situation where I let a premium domain, that I had discovered that was available for registration, slip through my fingers because I hesitated (performing TM due diligence). The person who snatched it sold it for 16K immediately. Yeah, it hurts, but it’s a proof of concept. I can find quality domains, I just have to not hesitate in the future.

Yea but the new extensions are going to replace .com right? lol
Can’t wait until owners get scared and start selling their .com names this year. Doom and gloom for .com that is what they will be writing about.
This, I sure hope will present some of the best deals in the coming year for .com names.
Example Catfood.com for 60k. I think even 1% of the catfood market is worth more than 60k

Hi Rick, I notice that you still own geteven.com and peeshots.com. Could you tell us how much they make per day nowadays? I’m assuming traffic has kept stable?

I really wish I had seen these posts back when you were writing them, I like to think I’d have been able to catch on to what you were saying about domains. I agree though, there is still opportunity out there today.

Sounds good, but how can I find a domain that earns 80 bucks/day? I have really no idea how to find out what the parking revenue would be.

Rick gets to park his domain at a special company that I suspect pays much higher than the regular parked companies.
Who would sell geteven so cheap…and did they not park it and know what it earned.

Yes, given that Rick still owns these domains a fair and honest assessment of how many uniques and how much PPC they get per day would be revealing. Fact is that since 2000 PPC has gone down the toilet. Me personally wouldn’t buy these domains today at the prices that Rick paid in 2000 but I’m looking for angles other than PPC.

And the beat goes on… Thanks Rick for the inspiration.
In Internet real estate the mantra has gone from location, location, location (Search engine rank) to develop, develop, develop.
The ‘develop it first’ rule I have has proven me correct since day one of the Internet. Parking was a blip on the radar. Blogging for PPC revenue using daily keyword trends was a blip on the radar. Product affiliates was a blip on the radar. Off shore quick development with content was another blip.
Develop, develop, develop. Make it real. Small to medium businesses are finally listening. Go get them!

    Off shore development.
You try it once and quit.
How it got so hyped up is beyond me.
yes, I fell into the stupid category for a while until I stopped listening to people.
Rick is one of the few that know what they are talking about.
How do you try to help so many people out and end up pretty much hated…my hat goes off to Rick for figuring that one out.
The BBC should start a show about the domaining world lol

    Steve,
Hate eventually turns a corner for those that are fair minded. I always say that”Time is my best ally.”
I hope by posting the banter from 2000 before there really was PPC and when domains were still $70 a pop to hand register and there was no road map in place nor tools to use, that folks see it is ALL in the mind. I can’t make anyone fail, but I sure as hell can lend them a hand to succeed. The fools that bite the hand in 2012 are no different than the ones in 2000. In 2000 when they had GREAT opportunity by today’s standards. But their minds and attitudes made them prisoners and for that they blamed me even though all I have ever done is try and give them the key to unlock their potential and not be trapped by the limits they placed on themselves by not knowing the difference between a sprint and a marathon and a race made up of both.

Hi Rick, thanks again for your inspiring story. But it seems unbelievable to me that two domain can earn $80 a day.I want to know more about no of traffic you get from those domain. Also mention how you get traffic is it 100% pure type-ins or anything else? One of my domain iMoron.com parked with afternic gets around 50 typeins per month but no click i.e zero revenue. I am really frustrated. Please guide us and tell us a bit more so that we could also stay a here for long term. I always wait for your article and find it interesting. Please help us find the right path.

Great post. You always advised folks. We need to follow. There are hundreds of ways to make money with domains & internet. But hard to convert. Only a handful of people knows how to. Everyday news ideas are coming in. Only a few dozen takes the advantage of the net or domains. Old ideas will be buried under new. Let us wait & see what comes next. But domain will remain at the center stage for ever.

    Thanks for the post Rick.
It looks like there was a straight forward business model in the year 2000 for generic domain names, which means naysayers made a big mistake.
But is there a similar model in 2012?

Harold, Apples and Oranges are in the mind.
I have heard the same baloney for the following years:
    1998
    1999
    2000
    2001
    2002
    2003
    2004
    2005
    2006
    2007
    2008
    2009
    2010
    2011
    2012
    And well beyond.
Each post I make I go out of my way to tell folks how many different ways you can climb the”Domain Mountain” and find success. There are an INFINITE amount of paths. For folks to not even find one means they are in the wrong business and domains is not their calling.
NOTHING was riskier than investing millions in an unknown and unproven medium back in 1996. Today you have an entire infrastructure. Complete support. Tools, Valuations based on prior sales. So much EASIER! But it only works when you really understand domains, business, history and than have the fortitude to put it all together.
    Risk today?? That’s laughable!
Apples and Oranges?? What if I give you that one. But it is still FRUIT my friend. That is the point. Argue about the nonsense and you win. Argue the big picture, you lose. Don’t be a loser. Recognize fruit when you see it. Don’t complain that it is different. Life is different with every passing second. So what? It’s meaningless. May as well crawl into a hole and give up. FRUIT! FRUIT! FRUIT! That is you and everyone reading this should recognize. And if you find some vegetables and meat along the path is that a bad thing? Of course not unless you are programmed like the folks I described in my post.
Don’t fall into the trap. There is a rope to pull yourself out. You have a choice to do that or try and be right and hang me with that rope. I don’t give a shit either way because I know how it plays out each time, year after year, person after person. I have basically lost that argument with millions of folks and only a few hundred agree with me out of all the billions on earth. Those folks are the real domain guys that have ALL found great success while the cheers and jeers on the sidelines never derailed their beliefs.
    :-)
The bar to get in the domain game is the lowest of any bar in any industry on this planet. I know many that get in within the past few years that came with nothing and managed to get in the middle of a few deals. Cost to do that? ZERO! $0. Parlay those dollars earned into other and bigger things. But you need to have IDEAS. IDEAS! Different ideas. Lost of them. Nobody can do that for you. That is mindless or lazy. Take your pick.
Let me be clear. The BEST days for domainers and those still to become domainers is in the future. We have barely scratched the surface. We are still in the infancy of an industry. And lastly, to completely make your argument have no merit…..the next domainer that finds success found something others gave up on. So if nobody ever finds success again with domains, then you win the argument. :-)

The big money now with domains is rather than the old PPC model is using cheap software to leverage a domains potential. Domains are worth more now because building them out has got so much cheaper. Me, I think the money is in quality, the right keywords with the right software with the right affiliate or product can pay very well. Rather than greenfield regging its more about brownfield development, and there’s plenty of it around. Keep it clustered, cross sell etc etc and you can develop something very lucrative, the geo domaining guys worked out their angle and the same type of approach can work in most industries (just as a starter for 10).

I am just discovering this industry and world and want to get involved. I do know though that Harold’s mode of thinking will never reach success. Success isn’t available for the closed-minded, the naysayers, it’s for those who see value where others have given up. I cannot wait to get started, I have hell bent determination in all that I do.
