What Was, What Is, What Will Be and What If?

Morning Folks!!

What Was, What Is, What Will Be and What If? Sounds pretty encompassing to me.

How long do you have to think and ponder on something before you find an answer? Well it can easily be a split second or a lifetime or a never. Pondering, thinking and digging very deep. See most folks only barely scratch the surface of life. I think most treasures are hidden below ground. Not all. Opportunity for example is above ground. You just have to know how to see the invisible. No digging required. In business asking the hard questions is Job #1.  It's actually a continuous job. One we do unconsciously or for some very consciously.

However one of two things generally happen. One will either not bother to dig or one will dig so deep that it becomes too deep. Too deep can present perils. Always a happy medium.

The domain game is changing and I see it mostly at the drop auctions. Plenty of end users are now in the mix and to be quite honest, hard to compete with an end-user as a domain investment. The numbers many times go too high and I don't see the upside in tying up that much money for an untold amount of time. So to spend $30,000 on a $50,000 name or even a $100,000 name no longer fits in my formula.

So you kinda have to go "Off Grid" to find investment quality domain names that will go up anywhere from 10x-100x in value. When you have domains like that you can rest assured you can liquidate if need be.

Quality is liquid. My top 1000 domains could be sold very quickly if I had to. When a domain has obvious value it has liquidity. If I list them I would get multiple offers quite quickly. I won't get a desirable price, but I could get liquid and that is what we all need to aim for.

Quality = Liquidity if you don't overpay.

In domaining quality is defined much like real estate. In fact, it is the almost the perfect parallel. Anyone dismissing that is throwing away the foundation of not only domaining but real estate principles a thousand years old and proven worldwide. Location is the driver of value and worth and all the rest.

So when you use that parallel it is pretty hard to get lost. What was, still is and will be. We can use the "What if" variable all day long but you only need to do that when you ignore the parallels we all share.

And in this business we have multiple parallels that run on separate tracks and don't intersect. They may cross paths, but they don't intersect. Not only do we have parallels in real things, but we have parallels in time and expansion and so many other things.

The future and all the new things coming are what makes domaining so dynamic. Why a SHARP person could come into this business TODAY and makes his millions. Real Estate is MUCH harder! Takes MUCH more time and effort and running around and wasting time. That is what makes domains so attractive and why I was always so mystified why Realtors were not the ones to figure this puzzle out first? They should have been over this like white on rice!

The world is full of so many parallels and since folks just dismiss the thought they have to pave their own highways that have already been laid for them. That wastes time, costs money and you lose because everyone else is in the fast lane and they know when to dig and when not to dig. Balance is key.

How many new products came out today? New sectors? New inventions? New needs for new things. accessories for what already is. Filling a void as mountains appear and valley's can thrive.

I truly believe there is more opportunity right now, today, then any other moment in history. It is the main reason 3rd world countries are now leading the world. Same world, same opportunities. It's a mindset. It is how you look and view things. It's about unleashing what is inside each of us. I always say we each have a gift and our job is figuring it out and don't let anyone minimize or do anything but help nurture it.

What Was,  What Is, What Will Be and What If, is just about thinking and not being lazy about it. You have to follow each path in your mind to the end. To the answer. Left or right, up or down. And if there are pitfalls along the way each has to be defined. Some pitfalls are deal breakers and you are done. Tho some will continue on a dead-end.

Buying the $15 Million mansion next to the town dump may not be the best bet. In fact, that would be an obvious deal breaker. It really does not matter how wonderful the Pool is or how large the Family Room is. The point is moot. So when you get to MOOT, a dead-end, your trip down that path is done and over. Dismiss it! Many may go beyond that point and that is at their own peril. Once I see "Moot", game over.

It's difficult to draw a picture of an intangible. But in my mind it is completely tangible because I am able to create a clear image in my mind and follow the path. I either get to moot and look for the next thing to focus on or I find an interesting answer and see how I can plug it in to the universe.

I realize many things that you can't really say out loud. The society in the USA now strives for mediocrity. And while many can't see it, I can because I remember when it was not like that. When we strived for excellence. Makes me want to puke. Know why? I was mediocre for two thirds of my life. I still only run at about 33% of my capacity. But at least I know the difference. Can see the difference. Understand the difference. Most importantly, the result is different. Excellence leads you to prosperity. Leads you to dreams. Excellence is the path to any great success.  I guess I was about 40 when I began figuring it out. But it is crystal clear now.

When the iPad first came out I wrote about all the companies that would not only utilize it but how many new companies would spring up to make things for it. Cases, plugs, keyboards and you name it. An entire CITY of products came to market just because of the iPad.

It was all forseeable. Once the seed is planted for a tree you can begin to figure things out. How tall will it grow? How much shade will it provide? How much area will it take over? You MUST ask these things and see these things BEFORE it grows into a tree or you may have branches going thru your windows and roots in your foundation. So their problem did not happen when the tree grew, it happened when they planted the seed and never asked the right questions at the right time and then got surprised by the result. DUH!

What Was,  What Is, What Will Be and What If? And that is just for starters. Digging for answers takes time and does not involve emotion. The key is following the answer even when you don't like. Even when it leads to an opposite place of where you thought you would be. Just hop on the nearest parallel and you will be on path.

Rick I love this post. I spent a lot of time reading blogs and commenting this weekend so indulge me as I leave one more. Why wouldn’t you buy a .LINK name for $9 to sell it for $1000 or more.. Or a .cooking for $35 and sell it for $3500. I stopped buying at auction long ago and changed rails “because” of what you’re seeing. Spending 30, 50k to make 100k is so much more risking than putting your thinking hat, making a list (like you did in the open days) and then registering names at registration price. I would take your top 1000 names and get the .LINK in all of them – at registration price – you’ll probably get most of them. It’s 1900 today and you’re in New York buying run down apartment blocks. For the price of one building you could get on the train and buy half of Orange County. Go West young man.

      Thanks Frank

I am working on a project that I will unveil in a few days that will show what can still be brought on the open market. All hand registrations by me.

So stay tuned and thanks for your comments.

I’m glad you enjoyed the article

As for the .link, i spent $2500 hand-registering about 300 mostly . Com domains that i will be openly discussing mid to late week. It took just a few hours. 1 by 1.

I had no starting point but i will show how my digging evolved and the VEIN i found that had yet to be mined.

I drilled down deeper than on any vein in all the time i have been domaining and will head back for another look around to see if i missed anything.

I will share my mindset and how i drilled and what i drilled for and why a person could come in today and do the same. And less risky imo.

I would say the best investment and best value are two-letter dot-com names. As two-characters marks are blocked with new gTLD programs, there is no real competition for those dot-com names. If such two-letter name is country code, then it is blocked with .biz, .info, .us, etc. as well. Even better, right? Short, unique, prestige… simply the best !

I wish all names with new gTLD are bought by greedy domainers, so it creates huge mess. Please go ahead. Please. All of you. Buy it all…

Really liked that thought… what seems foolish to many might actually be making clear and perfect sense to a few. I’ve hardly ever read about someone achieving greatness without having risked something or other on the path to achieve their dreams, be it personal relationships, finances, reputation or just the sanity of their minds.

So when I buy 1000 .links to me which I believe is your strongest extension I am aware of, that is $9000/year x 10 years or a $90,000 investment and commitment. The horizon for me when I buy a domain is always 10 years.

Then I get to ask myself is that $90,000 the best, safest and fastest way to grow my money? That is where I get hung up. It becomes more of a crap shoot at that point. I guess we each have to weigh the risk vs reward and know the $$$ may be tied up for many years. Which of course is something we are used to.

I can look and then ask if can I finance a premium domain for $9000/year? That can put sombody in a $25,000, $50,000 or even $90,000 domain with a willing seller. Probaby with less risk. So that is my balancing act when weighing all this.

Looking forward to it Rick. Whatever extension you buy the key is to buy something viable with enough margin to offset your overall inventory carrying cost. 50x is a minimum to shoot for. There are still lots of veins in .com but language doesn’t change that fast. The same words get recycled into different things. A “Bug” in the 1950’s was an insect, in the 60’s a car, today its a problem. “black friday” meant the 1929 stock crash when I grew up; or Web (spiderweb in the past). From time to time new words evolve like “twerk” (the dance) or “blog” (web-log), but by and large the same dictionary words get recycled to mean different things and those multiple meanings cause traffic to those generics to climb. There are not enough new words being born fast enough for young domainers to prospect for and the multiple meanings of existing words means it’s better to buy existing dictionary words and common phrases in “viable” new extensions than it is to prospect for future made up words in existing extension. Always remember to buy at reg price + sell high. GL

So this is what I will say about the list I have. First of all when I go into the mines I don’t judge too harshly. In other words that means I buy small markets and big markets and non existent markets and potential future markets. But I don’t sort thru them until after I secure them and climb out of the mine. Some are good enough to pay for all the others several times over which is another point I like to get to. I just look at all of them as chunks of gold and some are bigger than others but almost all are worth throwing in the wheelbarrel. Some are not gold at all but for what I do, the time in distinguishng those can be more costly that the $8 or $9 it costs to register for a year and then just drop them then. The mines I dug now are different than 10 and 15 years ago. Most are 3 words and that will surprise some. But they mean something. They pass my test and your test. They can put somebody in business and not all are .com.

Get some of the good ones and in 10 years you should be able to sell 2 of them for 45k each.. ebet.link will go out at reg price if its not icann reserved. Could you sell that one day for 45k? (you’re 1/2 way there) .LINK is the strongest generic except for .Web .. but i would get a good geo .tattoo at reg price and that’s a weaker extension. JMO

if somebody buys a keyword.links at US$ 9 and sell it for aftermarket price of US$ 18 (no more no less, just US$ 18) within a year, he/she gets 100 % ROI in a year. It’s much better investment than stocks or bonds or commodities. This person is not bound by time horizon. The only worry is whether the market value will grow to US$ 18 in a year. Please correct me if there is anything wrong with this humble calculation.

Calculation is right but nobody will do that because of existing name prices and simple greed. Also their carrying costs and the price of food/shelter/internet-access to carry them between sales dictates they need fatter margins on the sale. Mike.. 2 letters are NOT the most valuable names and there is no mess if speculators take names. They will create market clearing prices.. Domainers are the best salespeople on Earth. They helped build .com. Many went on to start companies like CNET — you’re either too young or new to this industry to understand how the ecosystem works.

Yes, my above hypothesis is based on a very very conservative assumption (market value in particular) to say that it would be relatively less risky if an investor’s time horizon is short to reduce inventory cost and that their target ROI is not so high. If somebody sees 1000 % ROI potential in another investment opportunity, the story is of course completely different from what I wrote above. The thing, however, is there exist people who are satisfied with even 50% ROI a year.

    Reply
  11. Frank Schilling

ROI is also a function of how much you can invest and total opportunity. If I give you a penny and tell you you can make 400% (4 cents) but you can only invest a penny, that’s not so interesting. There’s also the function of downside. At registration price there is far less likelihood of downside. 50% upside in scale with little or no downside is much more appealing than unlimited downside. Anyway.. it will all work out. Everyone HAGWE (what’s left of it)

Frank Schilling’s argument(s) are somewhat persuasive. Namely, the domain ecosystem are self-sustaining such that an investor (speculator) tolerates low carrying costs so long as margins are fat enough and one just waits for a greater fool for a decent amount of time.

However, I am always concerned about such Ponzi schemes unraveling if and when the economy gets much worse and a lot of this Mal-investment needs to be liquidated. Domains not making revenue are the worst investment and the greater fool may just be YOU

Replicating the past is not going to be an easy endeavor me thinks.

As Rick says ‘NEED, WANT, DESIRE’ are the key.

I just don’t see end users with most of the new extension [dot horse….really?] and domainers seem to be locked out of the best names in viable extensions.

All in all, this time it really IS different.

This is an excerpt from a blog post I made from August 2010 titled “Demand Media S-1: The DotTV Emperor Has No Clothes”
“So let me separate the grain from the chaff:

I am bullish on VIDEO, not dotTV. Because nothing SELLS like the POWER of VIDEO and there isn’t a profitable business that can’t be improved by adding video to its site. This is especially true in the b2b space.

I am also recognizing a bigger trend emerging. Where frustrated workers trapped in dead end jobs are desparate for an escape route from the corporate grind. They work longer hours and see their expenses rise as their benefits and paychecks fall.

The Today Show recently featured a segment on entrepreneurship — specifically, how many individuals are beginning to start businesses in response to a fragile economy and job market.

As unemployment rises (currently up to 7.5%), many driven individuals find themselves without jobs and are forced to find creative solutions to their economic pressures. They are reading about all the people making money and enjoying better work/ life balance with opportunities online. They are also rethinking exactly is it that they want out of work and life, and why. And what kind of world has the work they’ve been doing left for future generations?

The Today stories and those covering them in USA Today and in the LA Times featured examples of people who kissed corporate goodbye and took control their destinies by building a brand– and a future online.

Many worked in companies where the perception was that it took years, millions and manpower to build an online presence and acquire customers to drive success. But through Demand Media sites, and YouTube, they found a way to do it with nothing more then a webcam and and a skill they can share.

Whether it’s fixing a toilet, making a challah or reviewing wine and finding 80,000 people and $50 million find YOU default because of the value you add to their lives. We covered 45 million people glued to Fred, and 700,000 people watching the baker. The women who taped themselves hand-knitting blankets, offering them up for baby shower gifts, and out selling the local department chain. And the 28 year old dotCOM millionaire who lost it all by age 29 and got it all back and more with a different approach.

None of this is hype, but all documented success.

There’s a whole world out there ready to take advantage of this revolution.

It’s not about how many sites you own, how many eyeballs you can attract or what extension you choose to communicate in. It’s about making possible what was not possible before- about applying the power of the Internet to live and share your passion. Starting from your heart and let wealth and success find its way to your pocket.

Most people start out with a goal to sell ads and make money.

Here, instead of looking for money in the leads you can send to others, when look in your heart for the passion you can inspire in others, the money WILL find you.

I just see all these .whatever like shopping at big lots and .com’s being Tiffany’s. I know that sounds like a snob but it is human nature. We all want Tiffany’s. For this reason I have no idea how anybody can say .link is going to be one of the best. I see possibly .web and then maybe some gain to old .net. All others to me are trash and a joke. I also feel that the crash of these will be ugly and fast!

It’s always great to play both sides of the fence if you can afford it but that is one VERY expensive fence. I don’t see a .link button appearing on any phone anywhere in the world in our future. 40 million in advertising??? Awesome gamble, I hope it plays out well for everyone but I am definitely taking a wait and see approach. I think the co.com group made a very clever play. More .com owners need to utilize the left of the dot better as this is untapped premium real estate compared to the .whatevers.

Robbie – it’s really me .. Rick was talking about a 10 year horizon. Do you remember what you were doing in 2003-4 ? 10 years is a long journey. (2 economic cycles) inflation and demand from others will lift the value of even marginal strings. and Rick’s sale of the .com shows beet isn’t so marginal. The biggest risk is the small risk not taken. Is it really that inconceivable that in 10 years you could get 45k? Dude – I see the sales crossing the DNS platform and there are real numbers for names that would astonish you. Not everything gets reported. Everbody’s idea of “good” is different.

Frank, “2 letters are NOT the most valuable names” – just because you don’t own them, right? They are some, but not that many more valuable names, sure. Generally two-letter are one of the best. But you screwed my words, as I was pointing to no confusion, no competition, no alternatives for .com when it comes to two-letter dot-com names. Frank, you are a pro in twisting others words and opinions. What Rick is arguing is 100% correct and you always come with something contra, what is twisted, but at the end smart reader gets it that your word just confirming that Rick is right.

Thank you, for the feedback, in 2004, I was going to school, and selectively selling my domains, and holding domains I had registered back from 1997 to about 1999. I would get a random email from some real estate guy out of florida, some tech guy out of Palo Alto, and I would sell a domain for anywhere from 1K-20K, and take a trip, buy a car, put it into the stock market, go shopping, enjoy the money, as if it was free money… I did not start buying back in until the financial services started collapsing in 2009, I have been getting great deals up until early 2012.

Towards the end of 2012 to today, it has been very hard to pay thousands for domains I used to get for min bid, or a few hundred bucks… A domain that I did not participate in, but watched on Namejet the other day is CareTree.com, these are names, I could pick up for $59, or even less, and I got a few… it sold on Namejet for over $5K a few days ago… the bidder was an active bidder, so it is not an end user, it has a few live TM’s on it, so for someone to take that risk for $5K, they need at least $6K to break even given fees, and holding time… Yes, there are some offbeat sales, and some wacky sales, but end users are finding more information about registering domains online, and they are going direct to auction, as many of the houses put links on the direct expiring URL now…

Does someone like yourself, MB, RS need to own another domain name, given the caliber of exposure you have to the current marketplace today, not likely.

I have made some of my best sales this year selling .COM’s to .co/.me/.net owners, or people owning longer tail similar domain names. I mean .co is shorter than .com, but more domainers have lost money on it, sure the guys that got the reserved premium domains did fine, but the misguided traffic thought to have come, never showed up.

Many times when I got a strong offer on a .com name, I would register the .co, trying to take away an avenue from the end user, even when I sold them the .com, and offered the .co to them, they didn’t want it, even for free.

I feel the new GTLD’s are heavily regulated, why did .com work, it wasn’t held back, premium names weren’t reserved, it had playground type rules, first come first dibs… same reason bitcoin is gaining traction, people hate to be messed with, I do appreciate .tattoo, and .sexy have been very open, and straightforward with their low priced offerings, no hold backs, etc… Do i feel Tom.sexy might reserve his name, pay for a two years, then realize facebook treats him better, then drop their name, probably… but that is just my opinion… I look at good keyword .com’s from the 90’s, and early 00’s that are still being held as the right buyer hasn’t hit yet, I can’t fathom hundreds of other gtld’s to these terms, many with limited meanings…I know you didn’t get in on the first round, but on the round where many companies, and domainers were dropping their names on non action… could this be the case with gtld’s as well…

Nobody can say what is happening 10 years ago, many different technology based partners dictate this strategy, but the domainer is the one who sustains the eco system until it becomes breathable again… That is why the extensions that do stick, will gain traction quickly, as adoption of a few early partners that can make a splash will get attention, but that ones that fall hard will become 99 cent registars.

After reading Frank’s comments, it pretty much verifies to me the mindset of registries which is they intend to push the gtld’s to domain investors rather than to end users who are the ones who give true value to domains. The fate of .link, .web and all the other new extensions coming out that are heavily promoted to domain investors is the formula for failure. All the good domains that end users could slowly build up into possible successful websites for reg fees will all be held by investors looking for unrealistic prices. Yes, there will be lots of money made due to short term thinking with only profits in mind for the registries, registrars and flippers but after a few renewal cycles, those extensions will be no better off than .mobi in the long term. As like the rest of the failures of the past, a lot of investors will be left holding the bag again, losing millions of dollars when those registries go bust. Yes, there will be plenty of domains for any end user who wants one but if you are an end user who is serious about being in business on the net, they will get a dotcom because that is the only tld that is taken serious by most on the net. If you want to be international, then dotcom is the gold standard! Like I’ve said before, if there ever is a gtld that becomes a success, it will be a sleeper, not the hot gtld of the moment. If everyone is hot on any gtld, then you can bet that it will be a disaster in a couple of years. That’s how you can tell a loser in the tld market. The only exception is dotcom since it will always rein supreme!

How often has it occurred that a .COM holder will sell a domain with the .Net or .Info etc available for reg fee but the buyer wants the .COM? It has happened to me a number of times. .Whatever is not going to be a first or even second choice as existing extensions will be preferred over these new extensions for the foreseeable future. A beachfront condo over South Beach in Miami might go for top dollar, one several blocks away for a bit less, one several miles away in Overtown – not so much. Who wants to invest any serious money in a neighborhood people try to avoid? For 2013 DNJ reports the #100 .COM sale as $55k and the #100 alt GTLD (.net, .org, .info) sale under $10k. These extensions have been around for a decade or more. Now what does a #100 keyword .whatever sell for? How much does one have to pay to acquire that keyword initially and then how much will renewals cost over who knows how many years before a market develops for that extension which has to compete with hundreds of .whatever extensions? Does that .whatever investment offer the best risk-adjusted return?

A very stimulating blog post, a number of the comments, and looking forward to Rick’s account of his “mining expedition” soon.

Also, I’m sorry but I’m having trouble finding online what CoinNews.com sold for, which was mentioned here, so could someone give a link to that info if you can? Thanks…

Rick thanks for this post. The amount of discussion validates the topics. I tend to increase the names in my portfolio through new hand registrations. Having been in sales most of my life I know the importance of understanding my product and being able to convey to a customer a vision of how the product (domain name) can be used to their benefit. I find new names with meaning on a very regular basis. For domain name investors there are many opportunities to be explored.
My personal litmus test for new gTLD’s will be when one of my sisters (who are not in the domain name space) mention to me one of the new extensions in a conversation. That will indicate some recognition of that extension outside of people in the domain industry.

This is a very unique moment in time just like the 90’s were, but for different reasons. 2013 was very unique and I believe 2014 will reveal why….and it will be just the beginning.

I appreciate Owen and Robbie’s comments, and I think altaf is on point…I co-sign on that 100%.

I agree that .web is ‘probably’ the best gtld but boy does it have a tough road ahead of it to make any relevant impact. Im all for the gtlds doing whatever they are going to do though, because successful or not, its more attention to the internet and domain investing in general (shout out to Elliot by the way…ha, get it?).

And Frank, you are right about words. Which is exactly why I don’t think we need 1000 new extensions. I’m all for freedom and choice tho so we’ll see what the market says about the new gtlds.
Good luck to all. Rick another great post. Thank you! Very inspirational.

I took 2,500 dictionary generic words i added “LINK” to them and i got all those available in .com about 1,260 which means that if nobody care to make a business on (example) biologicallink.com in 25 years they sure don’t make a business on biological.link now.

All of the above names are now available on .com for reg. price $8

To answer your question no they are not worth it nor generic.link will be.

Frank will make money on them all he needs is about 3,000 names to sell to brake even.
As for us investors ,there is no secondary market on this new G’s they are all limited except .web

Who cares what a “.link” domain MIGHT be worth in 10 years if you would not build a business on it today (because that would really be risky) Buy a domain worth building a viable business on now and I’m sure you could get a quicker return than that. Maybe not a 45K return on reg fee but far less risky. Who knows what domains will be needed, wanted, or desired in 10 years. Is anyone able to predict what the Internet will even be like at that time?

30 – 50K for a possible 100K (value) dot com might sound risky, but coupled with a real business, the upside is completely unlimited. That is the opportunity I see everywhere right now at nearly every price range. And you don’t have to wait for flying cars and lifelike robotic women. (Weren’t they supposed to be here in the year 2000?)

These are the type in-depth conversations we should be having. Hope more of the gTLD operators will follow your lead Frank and all. Thank you!

Facing the critics is what selling is all about. I learned one thing in sales, when they stop objecting, game over. Sale is lost. These guys that are intimidated by me, by domainers and others, just can’t stand the heat. So they say stupid things and can’t back up their words.

M&M and Donuts (kinda funny) may be able to fool outside investors that know nothing about this space into seeing blue skies and a second coming, but insulting the very base they NEED more than they WANT and more than they DESIRE, better come to grips with reality. Domainers are the main booster rocket that can launch them. We understand we are bth devil and angel in this equation. But those folks sure know how to bring out the devil in folks. And since they ain’t no angels, they understand both sides of the coin.

Great post, are the domains you drilled and drilled for part of that conversation on Domain Sherpa, who could hand reg the best domains for $1800.After watching that show i was buying 3d printer domains and did some drilling of my own, as you said what are the uses and what are the products and services that will come from this and as i drilled and drilled i struck some gold. Can’t wait to see what gems you have dug up.
@rich excellent example of the dot com’s that are just lying around for reg and why as rick say’s, that all the dot com’s are not gone. To all you domainers, Drill Baby Drill.

The moment I heard that Frank was applying for some of the new gtlds I said to myself that his intention is most likely to sell the majority of them to some of the businesses that didn’t get into the first round for double or triple the money, and, that the only ones he would keep are those he believes he could sell enough urls to individuals to make worth his time … imagine the recurring revenue a couple hundred K of dotsexy registrations can do for ones bottom line…

At least, that’s the way I see it…

    More like WTF.

The “Domain King” TRAFFIC organizer and the world-famous wet-legged “Legendary Domain Investor” have been reduced to hand regging and hawking .junk. I guess it’s been a while since I paid any attention to the multimillionaires club. It’s kind of sad, really.

I think Rick is doing hand registers in a contest and to prove a point. I don’t think he has announced them so I don’t think he’s hawking anything either.

If the economy goes in the tank and homes flood the market why not buy some distressed property for pennies on the dollar?

    Reply
  52. domainpawnshop

    @nameorder

Besides your post, I don’t see the word contest anywhere on the page. To the contrary, Rick in fact says this:

“The domain game is changing and I see it mostly at the drop auctions. Plenty of end users are now in the mix and to be quite honest, hard to compete with an end-user as a domain investment. The numbers many times go too high and I don’t see the upside in tying up that much money for an untold amount of time. So to spend $30,000 on a $50,000 name or even a $100,000 name no longer fits in my formula.”

The wet-legged legend was an obscure reference to Frank’s old blog (http://domaingang.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/frankphoto01.jpg) and some ribbing over his giddiness about his new extension.

And finally, the economy doesn’t seem like it’s going in the tank. And even if it were, the level of sniping Rick is talking about seems shockingly out of character and extremely difficult to scale.

But it’s all in good fun, so no worries.

    Cheers!
