Some people collect art, some people collect wine… “I happen to love domain names.”

Morning Folks!!

"Some people collect art, some people collect wine… I happen to love domain names."

And that was a quote that I happen to love, agree with and want to use many times in the future because it describes exactly how I feel too.

That quote was from Daniel Thralow from Mike Berkens Blog Post yesterday in reference to the sale of Internet.org domain name to Mark Zuckerberg.

"Some people collect art, some people collect wine… I happen to love domain names."

And that is my passion as well. I hope it is yours.

    Hi Rick,
We are rather addicted to domain collection. It’s my passion. You made it so! Gratefully,

I collected domains in my couple of niches until they were no longer dropping regularly or available to acquire from owners. I am very content with my current exhaustive collection. I have been moving on to development now and am pursuing my new passion of collecting greenbacks. Hopefully it will go as well :)

I seem to be collecting a lot of stock. I collect it faster than I sell it. If I don’t watch out at this rate in 2.4 years I’ll need a bigger house as it will be like a secret hoarders paradise. lol… lucky with domains they are all virtual. But collecting passwords is hard work to maintain…

This is a fascinating subject, Rick. Like many collecting arenas, domaining caters for all budgets, provides a spectrum of opportunity between quantity and quality, triggers obsessive completion of sets of related things, combines a mixture of an art and a science, encompasses overt and covert markets, responds to market dynamics changing over time by embracing new fads while valuing established marques … and takes advantage of highly personal and highly opinionated perspectives on value. Perhaps another insight is that the collecting habit provides opportunities for registries, registrars, parking companies, affiliate schemes and the rest to take advantage of domainers : the domaining equivalent of selling stamp albums and hinges to philatelists or shovels to those pursing an apparent goldrush.

I like to think of it as Art, Art that can be learned from, used, or simply enjoyed for Art’s sake. It is even Art that you can sell in some cases, sometimes for $millions!

I’ve got a fun gang of Art domains that I like to paint on.

You folks can check ’em out at ‘ircyb.org’ if you are interested. I’d like to sell a couple of them cus this fool’s broke and needs to earn some food.

    Know what I mean?

    Thanks for the blog Rick!
