The Sun Never Sets on the English Example: Why WORDS + .com are and always will be the Internet Standard

Morning Folks!!

I'm probably going to use terms or say a few things in this post that are wrong.

That's because I personally don't believe it's worth the while for me to invest in foreign language .com domains (whatever domainers call those) or country code extension domains.

Because in MY lifetime there is more opportunity to profit with dot com as an INVESTOR, even though as a speculator there is money to be made down the road with those, and great money to be made TODAY with businesses using those in certain DEFINED instances.

Just nowhere near what's coming with dot com as a quaint 20 year hobby of a few thousand people you may just be learning about TODAY...called 'Domaining' transforming by the DAY into a new industry and asset class called eRealEstate.

And so I haven't researched those foreign language dot com or country code domain name topics in the depth I've researched the brand of dot com, which I personally believe is probably the most mind-branded concept in the history of mankind (that doesn't have a theology attached to it anyway).

That's right folks, the history of big ideas that WON over other ideas in the evolution of our species goes like this:

Of course I left out a few steps and I'm sure if one of my HS history teachers or college history professors would be quite upset at my incomplete essay and the fact that some might be in the wrong order...but fact is I ain't writing a meticulously researched treatise on the history of history to get an 'A'...I'm letting you know I've seen the future and its because a guy named Rick Schwartz saw it first and pointed it out to me.

Just as he's been pointing it out to people selflessly (and selfishly too...yes he has an agenda, and that agenda is becoming richer each time he helps someone else become richer too).

Tirelessly pointing it out for close to 20 years, and getting A after A with just a few Bs and Cs...for a guy that I don't think ever really cared too much about formal education, college etc its almost amazing how prescient many of his predictions have turned out to be about eRealEstate.

And I am starting to understand how he's so puzzled when so many other people choose to disagree with him and keep getting an F why they wouldn't just ask for his help and look at his cheat sheet of notes he's been maintaining for decades in journals just like this one here on

I'm not saying there isn't opportunity in other places of the domain name universe for investors. There is...I'm just puzzled why anyone as educated as the long-time readers of this entire blog would bother, especially viewed in light of the fact that the newest viewers of this blog are entrepreneurs and business leaders first and domainers second....they each have ONE 'big idea' they want to turn into a business (startup) or to use to propel a business further (established company).

There is so much opportunity in .com, why bother with anything smaller that has been proven less valuable and will increasingly be proven so?

The future dollars of dot com is eRealEstate, not Domaining.

It's just not yet proven.

Give it 3 years and you'll kick yourself if you don't stop complaining today that all the good .com domains are taken...and start realizing ALL the great .coms available then WERE TAKEN 20 years ago.

Some others evolved with changes in culture, technology, human nature, products etc...

They were taken for a reason folks.

They ain't coming back.

And no equal alternative is possible in this lifetime, though THOUSANDS of www.domain.craps die will be cast hoping for Daddy's Lucky #7.

As Sergeant Bilko said it best when asked 'Sir, is there anything else we can do for you?' by the hotel concierge after he threw several winning Craps tosses in the row:

'Yes, go down to your vault and tell the rest of your money to be patient...we'll be together soon.'

Dot com is the new global eRealEstate, and almost anything a man or company or business can do to make money with physical real estate, he can do BETTER with eRealEstate.

Rick Schwartz predicted it on the day he registered on November 4th 1996 and all these years later people still look him up, chase him down, follow the yellow-brick road from a property he owns that they wanted to buy (so they could build on), and knock on his virtual VAULT front door at and say 'Rick, you're wrong!'

And he steps out from around stacks of cash and gold bars and virtually looks at them and says-- a little brusquely maybe at times-- when they step back off his front porch and he can get a good look at them:

'Who are you? What do you want?'

And when they say 'I want to buy your land you're not building on.'

He laughs and tells them he's been expecting them, asks them what they want to do with the land and closes the door.

They read that brusque email from this guy they find out calls himself the 'Domain King' and sometimes they think he wants to steal their 'idea' (never realizing in many cases HE had their big idea...or one close to it...17-20 years before when he registered the idea's best possible name on the Internet), many times going away to work harder and not smarter because of their irrational fear.

And when they reply to the email and come back and knock again with their reason why they can only pay $$$ couched as an objection that they don't believe what they're trying UNSOLICITED to buy ain't worth what he says it is, he laughs again.

Then replies to their challenges, questions and counters all in English words, and they do the same...even when a growing percentage of them are from dozens of other countries than US, UK or Australia...(hint), and maybe he says something like this:

'My land isn't for sale at any cash only price you'll want to pay, but you can use it and buy it down the road when your business can afford to pay an amount that's fair out of the increased profits I'm confident you'll make for the same reason I knew you'd show up here knocking, knocking at my virtual vault door.'

And for 17 years most of these would-be land buyers would shake their head at the IDEA to build something on land they didn't yet own, and walk away to work harder and not smarter.

Today it's changed.

We get it Rick.

The lessee can own the shop and sell to all the foot traffic while you own the retail space.

The lessee can build, own and operate the office skyscraper starting with one floor at a time going up...while you own the land underneath.

The lessee can build the business of their dreams and own it...and you simply provide the foundation you'll give up as soon as they're ready to be their own eLandlord and buy you out so in time the successful ones own both the land AND always from day one own what's built ON it, with never a worry that it would be 'stolen' more than a landowner can or would steal a shopping mall or a skyscraper so long as the business owner leasing the land pays as agreed to use it.

99 year land lease?

It's happened before. And anyone can look it up. Maybe they should read about who owns the land underneath Irvine, CA or many other cities where one family was smart enough to buy up all the land and make great deals for anyone to build.

One parallels another, history will repeat itself...only this one will happen faster.

And one day the currently offered 30 year domain lease deals and the 5 year lease to own deals offered to the fast movers in the next couple years as this new market gains worldwide acceptance will simply be GONE.

And your only options at THAT time to get the dot com domain name you want and need will be a 99 year lease or a piece of your company. It's dot com and its eRealEstate.

And it's here to stay.

And you can get your piece of the Internet Dream for your start-up company for nothing more than $3000 as a set up deposit and start paying monthly on the lease deal.

Happy to wait all DECADE doing what you feel is 'nothing' (but that makes us effortless income) on 80% of the properties, if the 20% include doing deals with companies that have vision and money both (or one or the other is often fine too).

Just be sure we're speaking the same LANGUAGE and the $$ numbers will work themselves out with time and conversation.

    Here is the deal in a nutshell, easy to understand and brilliant move by Verisign.
    The beginning of the expansion of .com into the dozens of major languages of the world by Verisign (managers of the .com and .net registries) is incredibly simple to understand.
    Under the”new” gtld program Verising initially applied for 12 .coms and .net (the audible sound”.com” and”.net”) in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Thai, Hebrew, and Arabic. The cool thing is, its a 2 for 1 deal. The holder of the idn.COM, also get the idn.(.COM foreign language) version. Both have the same sound”.com”, one in english the other in Chinese, Japanese etc.
    Up to now non-english reading internet users have been using gtld and cctlds in english, now they get BOTH .com (english) AND .comChinese etc and can use one or both to point to thier website. began registering in 2000, and most of the”top” names were taken then but still some good opportunities in the space. As of the end of November 2012, Verisign had 929,029 registered, and 274,761 idn .net registered. Not surprising, the Chinese hold the bulk of the registration. :)

    No disrespect but disagree on this one 100 percent.
    If anything it shows is that .com is worldwide and global. means serious business vs .junk
    I am in a purchase agreement on a domain name currently and guess what… People are typing it in each day and over 2400 type ins a year. Also have another spanish domain name that made me 40 bucks. Guess what its dot com.
    Someone who is preaching .com should be jumping of joy on foreign language .com domains and support .com. I just dont see it.
    In regards to domains, I own 4 domains currently and 2 of them do over 500 type ins a month.
    I will buy more domains and pay up on them as well. Growing population and sector.
    Just my 2 cents.

    I think everyone agrees .com is KING. We all wish we were as focused as Rick 15+ years ago.
    It is just that there is a new opportunity with a very low entry fee and its the idn and foreign language .com names.
    The .whatevers are just noise that will make registrars some money, maybe.
    While’s rule the roost and will continue to, their foreign cousins are bringing in traffic and $$ as Jeff has mentioned.

    Who’s not liking .com or I think Jeff Schneider is giving Verisign’s strategy a thumbs up. If you listen to the last two Verisign earning reports you hear them talk about part of their future .com growth being in the international language .com sectors.
    I think Rick is a supporter of all things .com but from reading his comments over the years I sense that he feels that international lanaguages limits your global reach vs. english/latin .com since english is the main”language of business” in the world.

    That’s pretty close to how I see it because english is the main”language of business” in the world.
    I would also say I focus on what I know the best and the buying power in some regions with huge population masses are not what they are in other parts of the world with lesser population.

    a contradiction i am calling it. he should be supporting my statement and not bash foreign investments or being a diversified investor besides
    goes to show how serious .com domains are”worldwide” and yet contradictions things. which one is it danny? i think you need to research more on the topic as well.

    I been reading Rick over the years as well. I am being critical of Danny who should spend more time.
    Thats like saying ok domains are the only way to go but foreign domains are not of value. I am saying thats bullshit basically in regards to Danny.
    Would he rather have a domain name in native language over a domain name?
    I thought .com is global. Wordwide. The benz. The best of the best but yet it only caters to domains. I am saying contradiction.
    Thats like saying Rick, dont diversify your investments. Keep all your english domains but dont buy apple stock. Dont have various realestate locations or summer places. IMO that is called being a well rounded investor as Rick is and its all about roi.
    Maybe I am missing the picture of what is trying get across but Danny needs to taught a few lessons on being a diversified investor besides domains.
    Yes I know domains are the best. Not saying this. But lets get real Danny. My spanish type in traffic on .com is solid traffic and in a growing population.
    Just my 2 cents. Read it for what its worth. And yes I plan to keep adding to my type in traffic as well.

    I think Danny’s got his plate full for the moment doing something like 100+ sales essays on his first round leasing properties.
    But I’m sure he would not turn his nose up at a proposal for an”International” sales guys like you to help start to round up some A list names for potential lease for the future potential of helping perk that market. Closing a few deals in Shanghai or Bangkok could be make for a fun business trip.

    LOL…coming from a guy I will bet has a sizeable IDN portfolio, and hiding behind a hidden username.
    I certainly don’t have any hidden agenda, the link on my name is to an IDNForum where its free to join, and free to read thousands of posts and make up your own mind about the opportunity. The forums is rree to post on, free to sell names on etc.
    Everything I stated about Verisign, ICANN, GAC, and the gtld rollout of IDNs is fact, published and documented.
    The IDN gtld rollout is moving foward (hopefully on schedule) ICANN gave IDN gtlds the first 100+ spots to go live in the root. Lets hope the registries have their acts together when they get the”go ahead” green light from ICANN.
    For the vast majority that”missed the boat” on ASCII domains in 1995, could ‘possibly’ duplicate the upward trend in valuations to some degree over the next 5-10 years and beyond.
    I don’t expect IDNs to”equal” the value of a like english .com but who knows. There are rich Saudis and Chinese paying $1,000,000 plus for vanity license plates so who knows what they might pay if they really want something.
    The only real question is to what degree the billion Chinese, Japanese, Russians, Indian, and Asian internet users (the majority which don’t speak English) would like to use”native language” domains. Certainly advertising agencies will see great marketing potential in them as being not only brnadable, but memorable and easy names to search and remember.
    ICANN, Verisign and the various ccTLD registries have already jointly spent over $100,000,000 getting the IDN program implemented over the last decade so the only thing thats a sure bet is they aren’t planning to cancel it.

    My prize is (sex in spanish) and it it has traffic of around 3 million annually. Earnings are pretty decent
    But I can say I have never had a bona fide offer even tho sold for $13mm

    Yes, opportunity in both. TREMENDOUS UPSIDE in those foreign language”.com” ponds country by country and I don’t deny that. (nor did I say I have all the facts about…I specifically said I didn’t and that sometimes invites criticism but what the hell I believe in shooting straight with people and not pretending I know everything about everything– an impossibility)
    I simply see .com still as having MORE upside…when so many ‘domaining’ enthusiasts complain that”all the good English dot com’s are gone” I don’t get it? Don’t they realize that is the VERY SAME THING that created a new industry called eRealEstate that’s been being born for years?
    What the hell do people think *I* did to have the opportunity I’ve created for our eRealEstate domain leasing team to make more money on ONE $1000/mo standard lease deal potentially than a number of them have ever made in years of frustrated domaining trying to work with inferior product?
    It’s called an option contract in RE, folks.
    And it ain’t rocket science.
    I ain’t smart enough to be the only guy to have figured out…just the one smarted enough to have asked Rick Schwartz to be my first customer.

    Uhh…yeah. If it’s fun I’m totally IN. Just don’t tell my girlfriend Rick owns okay? She might get the wrong idea. Here, instead we’ll market Whew, that’s better. I’m sure someone has a nice VILLA VACATION RENTAL in the Tuscan countryside they’ll throw in if I ask the right end user who wants it the right way (in addition to getting the lease amount the DN owner is asking for).
    Certainly more fun than trying to sell later this year. Still struggling with who the market will be exactly for that one. But I’m glad Mr. Ken L gave us the opportunity to market that property. And even more glad that I won’t need to LEARN the language of Hebrew to sell the IDEA..
    Because of course if they want it, they speak English too. :)

    I am saying Danny your making big contradictions. All I am saying is Foreign domains are part of the domainer community with the meaning of the domain name and type in traffic.
    A small domainer climbing to the mountain of the top. Just saying Danny needs to research things before he starts rambling along and no facts on things.

    No nonsense, and maybe I rambled a little yeah. Ain’t the first or last time!
    I don’t see a contradiction at all, just genuinely puzzled because I see something (a new industry graduating from Domaining to eRealEstate) when others are more excited to pursue other avenues of business/investment and I can’t figure it. As you say, I haven’t tried.
    Unlike the 1800″.whatever” which I have stated I agree with Rick Schwartz they will almost all fizzle and play for second fiddle to .com the king…however, the foreign language .com’s are a potential BONANZA of dollars to domainers.
    Like a re-run of Bonanza that ol TV show, maybe? But here’s what I see… every time you run a re-run of Bonanza or dupe the show to make it”new” in a new language and culture with SUBTITLES…even tho folks in that new country enjoy it, they clamor for the original to create new episodes right? Well, here that can happen because ENGLISH .com is all gone but folks are learning ENGLISH and trusting”.com” even in their non-English language.
    Sounds like a win-win for everyone who puts dollars (or pesos, or yen or whatever) into the juggernaut that is”dot com”…no argument there.
    FWIW I’m not a domaining ‘guru’ or anything. I do know a few things about sales and business but Rick’s my mentor in domaining. I probably wrote the”guts” of that post 4 months ago, and I have learned a few things since then Rick I’m sure could have corrected me on if he wanted to bother. Maybe he knew his extremely SMART readership would do it? :)
    But most of what I wrote then that Rick just posted today IS spot-on with how I see the eRealEstate/Domaining market today and evolving tomorrow.
    So I like ya Jeff (as if you’d care!).
    I just wish I knew WHO it was I liked…

    Answer = India already has adopted the english .COM as a prize that all their different language dialects recognize. Chinas government sresses English adoption in their schools as a #1 proirity.
    A few people know about my experiences in International Marketing. I can tell you right now the clever Chinese Multi-nationals prefer .COM as the prize example of free capitalism, unbridled by their current regime. They view .COM as the prime Trophy platforms of choice for Internet commerce. These Smart Money Chinese entreprenuers make money both ways.They are agressively adopting the English American ways of Capitalism.
    Just ask Andrew Rosener one of Broker super stars, about his (Chinese Connection),there are lots of Chinese multinationals entering our turf through the .COM pipeline.See recent Article in WSJ on Sanfrancisco Chinese Banking Giant.Many many more to follow,trust me on this, but verify first and you will find Rick is Dead Balls On.

    Rick and Danny, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Chinese, etc….are just now taking off. Go look at the stats, these folks are just now getting their act together. Think U.S. in 2000, that’s where many countries are at, but they are dying to catch up.
    I’ve started selling a bunch of foreign language domains in the last year. They are starting to come of of the woodwork all of sudden.
    In fact, I now get as many foreign inquires and sales as I do with U.S. domains, and these people are not sending low-ball offers either. Many of them get business better then Americans because in many countries they have tougher business conditions and have to be smarter just to make it. It’s survival of the fittest and the fittest want the best .com and/or ccTLD of their country they can get.
    You guys are missing it. I really mean that. Big money is passing those by that ignore it or dismiss it.

    J Schneider- you are partially correct and mostly incorrect. Yes, they prefer .com adn if they are smart they will get BOTH the English and the Chinese/Hindi version. That corners the market wouldn’t you say?
    A good portion of the internet users in India AND China don’t speak English, so they don’t know WTF most words means most of the time. And logic says they would remember a (first time seen or heard) catchy brand better than an name if english is your second language.

    So for each 1000 internet users that”drive by your roadside billboard be it in Mumbai or Shanghai, and you have a BIG advertisement in English….lets just choose, probably less than 50% of them won’t be able to read it. Talk about .co bleed!!!!
    But put that same internet address up there in Hindi or Chinese (best of course in English and Hindi or Chinese) …and virtually 100% of the internet users that drive by will not only read it, but remember it.
    Take a check on how many major daily newspapers in India are printed in Hindi and their circulation, and how many are printed in English (and their circulation) and get back to me.
    Now do the same for China….
    The cellphone is the computer of the future in India and China, so even more non-English speaking, Hindi speaking Indians and Mandarin speaking Chinese will be online.
    Given that both these countries have over a billion population, check their internet penetration (especially in China) and its a staggering potential number.
