Top Single Domain Sales Hits $20 Million!! Sex.com no Longer Highest Domain Name Sale.

Evening Folks!!

It was rather stunning event at TRAFFIC today and the last panel of the show, Meeting of the Chiefs". First, we found out that the $25 Million in reported domain sales by DNJournal.com for the 3rd quarter of 2013 was about 1/2 to 1/3 of unreported sales just by Escrow.com alone as reported by TheDomains.com.

Further, Andee Hill from Escrow.com went on to say that the  total dollar volume of domain sales that get processed through Escrow.com,  greatly exceed the amount that gets reported saying; “we close in some weeks more dollars in domain sales than what other company’s report in sales for the entire year."

Lastly, when asked about any sales larger than the record $14 Million Sex.com sale, we found out that Sex.com no longer holds the record. Andee Hill said she knew of one for $20 Million and Greg McNair added he also knew of a sale in excess of the sex.com sale. Now this does not mean there have not been sales in excess of $20 Million because this does not include private sales using buyer and sellers own lawyers that may hold even larger sales. Some specualte they may have reached levels of $50-$100 Million.

Let me close with this.

The domain channel is much larger than anyone thinks and  top notch domain sales are SIZZLING! There is no hotter commodity on the market today than a meaningful domain name.

No surprise here. I have been on record saying non-disclosure sales are the whole submerged side of an iceberg, out of sight. . Large End-Users keep the big sales secret for selfish reasons.

I feel blessed to be in the position I am in. Cheers Rick !

Well, we’ve known for quite a while that there are only really so many great .com’s around. Owning a great .com and having that for worldwide coverage is pretty special, how much does it cost to have a patent registered world wide, run sales offices in each nation etc etc… so domains and .com are cheap by ANY standard.

Some of those escrow sales may have websites and ecommerce businesses attached.

Some of the larger corporates are going to get seriously aggressive and start buying loads of web related businesses and the people attached to them, its part of the great decentralisation and niche marketing that I’ve always thought would happen. (Having these businesses as ‘owned’ affiliates on performance bonuses etc is far better than people sitting in central locations)…. this is why I bang on about having .shop as a TLD. If it goes to auction it may go for $1 billion+ if Google / Amazon / Yahoo / Facebook / eBay get serious.

LasVegas.com was over 20M but at the time it wasn’t just a domain, although most of the value by far was the domain . Same happened with some insurance domain names.

Even Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Electronics] claims that in January 2009 LG purchased domain name LG.com for more than $100 million.

Thanks Rick for breaking such domain sale. But no one made reference of sale of business.com.

Rick, thank you for refusing to use NDA. Your sale gives us a glimpse of the current market status. I look forward to reading your further sale of premium domain names later this year.

[…] This press release seems a little misleading. The title says that this Finnish boy sells the domain but I do not see anywhere in the press release that it actually sold. Also should he raise the price to over $20 Million since we found out that 16 million isn’t the highest a domain has sold. You can read more about the 20 Million sale here: http://www.ricksblog.com/2013/10/top-single-domain-sales-hits-20-million-sex-com-longer-highest-doma… […]
